- as did George W. Bush in 1978.
- Bill Clinton lost a 1974 House race and his first re-election as governor of Arkansas, in 1980. (He made a comeback two years later.)
- George H.W. Bush lost a Senate race in 1970 and was an unsuccessful candidate for the GOP presidential nomination in 1980.
- Ronald Reagan failed to win the Republican nomination in both 1968 and 1976.
- Jimmy Carter lost his first bid to become Georgia's governor, in 1966.
- Richard Nixon was defeated for the presidency in 1960 and the California governorship in 1962.
- Lyndon Johnson lost a special election for the Senate in 1941.
